2017 Cottontail Cobias Swim Team
The Cobias will be competing in NVSL Division 5 for the 2017 season.
Our Coaching Staff
The Cobias would like to thank our Head Coach Meghan Wallace, for a great season! Please Sign up for Winter Swim, only a few spaces remaining! Also, read the following message she had for the 2017 team:
"I am so excited to be a part of Cottontail Cobias swim team! I have been coaching with Machine Aquatics since 2013, and this will be my first summer as an NVSL head coach. I am also a teacher with FCPS. For the past 4 summers, I have taught summer school and have finally decided it is time to be on the pool deck. I was born and raised in NJ and made my way to NOVA in 2012. I love the outdoors, especially going to the beach. Swimming has been a huge part of my life. I swam from the time I was nine until I graduated college in 2009. While I can’t say I always miss being in the pool, I definitely miss being part of a team. I am looking forward to working with all the kids and having a great season! Meghan"
The Cobias are also welcomed back Jay Sierra, Jr. as our Assistant Head Coach! Coach Jay is a valued member of our Cobia summer swim family, a former NVSL and WSHS swimmer, and a veteran of 7 years as a Cobia Junior Coach and Assistant Coach.
Swim Team Orientation Meeting
The Cobias will host their annual orientation meeting on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 in the cafeteria at Sangster Elementary School (7420 Reservation Drive, Springfield, VA 22153). Team suits will be on sale beginning at 6:45 pm and presentations about the Club and the swim team will begin at 7:30 pm. Note: We are in the second year of a two-year team suit. New suits are required only for new members or size/wear issues.
ALL COBIA FAMILIES are urged to attend as we have made changes to the practice schedule and we will be hosting the Division 5 Relay Carnival meet which will affect the volunteer hour requirements for ALL Cobia families for this season.

Swim Team Practice Groups:
Age Group Practices:
Mini/Junior Cobia Practices:
Mini Evaluation Day: Monday June 26, 2017 beginning at 8:45 am. Pre-registered Mini/Junior Cobia swimmers will be assigned a scheduled evaluation time using Sign Up Genius. Swimmers who register on Evaluation Day will be asked to wait until all scheduled evaluations are completed and then evaluated in the order of registration.
Practice time: 8:50 am - 9:30 am, Mon - Fri; June 27 to July 27; Mini/Junior Meet at 10:00 am July 28th.
The Mini (ages 8 & under) and Junior (ages 9-12) Cobia practice groups are for beginning swimmers who cannot yet swim multiple laps of the pool during a practice session and who are still working on learning basic stroke techniques.
These practices are structured much more like group swimming lessons, with multiple instructors in the water with the swimmers in order to teach and assist them. This format of instruction requires us to utilize all of the shallow end of the pool in addition to the regular swim lanes, so we cannot begin these practice sessions until the school year ends and our team is able to use the pool during the mornings when it is closed to the general membership.
Within the Mini practice group, the swimmers are divided into levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 according to their ability, with Mini 1 being brand-new swimmers and Mini 4 being those who are nearly ready to begin Age Group practices. Within the Junior group, there are two divisions, beginner and intermediate. Our goal is have all of our Mini 3 & 4 swimmers (and our intermediate Juniors) participate in a developmental meet by the end of the season. All of our Mini and Junior Cobias are invited to swim in the Mini/Junior Meet on July 29th.
All registered members of the swim team are included in and invited to all swim team activities, regardless of which practice group they are assigned to!!
If your swimmer is going to practice with Mini/Junior Cobia group, you should still register them at the beginning of the season in order to be included in team e-mailings, announcements, and activities. If you wait until Mini/Junior practices begin, you will be missing out on many of our most popular social activities for the swimmers.
We are always in need of certified officials!! No prior experience is needed, just a willingness to make summer swimming a fun and positive experience for our team and the ability to volunteer on deck at our swim meets.
If you are interested in joining our group of certified officials and have no prior experience, we encourage you to attend one of the Stroke & Turn Judge Clinics listed on the 2017 Schedule.
If you are interested in becoming a Starter or Referee, you must attend one of the New Starter or New Referee Clinics.
If you are a current or former certified official and are re-certifying for summer 2017, you must attend the Referee/Starter clinic and/or the Stroke & Turn Clinic. The New Starter and New Referee Clinics cannot be used to re-certify. Schedule link below:
Non-Certified Meet Volunteers and NVSL University:
Interested in getting involved with our meets, but don’t want to be a certified deck official? There are many non-certified positions that need filled at every meet, and although these positions do not require attendance at training clinics, the NVSL University (Saturday, June 3 at Fairfax County Government Center, various times) offers very helpful training and refresher seminars for these positions. Please take a look at the schedule and attend a training clinic!
For summer 2017, the following are critical need areas:
Chief Timer – A meets (Saturday mornings)
Chief Timer – B meets (Monday/Tuesday evenings)
Clerk of Course – both A and B meets, we need additional volunteers who can attend the training sessions. Go to mynvsl.com for complete information and schedule for NVSL University.
These are the Rules for our “B” Meets with the Springfield/Burke Developmental League. See the link below for details.
Swim Team Practice Groups:
Age Group Practices:
This group consists of swimmers who are able to swim multiple laps of the pool using both freestyle and backstroke. The Age Group swimmers will begin daily (Mon-Fri) practices on the Thursday after Memorial Day, according to the following schedule:
High School Swimmers 4:30 pm – 5:15 pm
Middle School Swimmers: 5:15 pm – 6:00 pm
Elementary School Swimmers: 6:00 pm - 6:45 pm
These after-school practices are scheduled according to the school dismissal times of the majority of our swimmers. Swimmers who wish to practice with a different group than their grade level (e.g. 8th graders who attend a secondary school and can arrive in time for the High School practice) may do so with the approval of the Head Coach. The Elementary School practice is a very large group, so we encourage any 5th and 6th grade students who can consistently arrive at the pool by 5:15 pm to practice with the Middle School group.
Once the school year ends, our practices shift to the morning according to the following schedule (please note swimmers MUST practice with their assigned age group based on their actual age as of June 1 of the current year):
8 & under swimmers: 7:30 am - 8:15 am
9 - 12 year old swimmers: 8:15 am - 9:00 am
13 & up swimmers: 9:30 am - 10:30 am
Beginning the Tuesday after school ends, we will hold an evening practice session every Tues/Thurs from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm (except as noted on the team calendar). These practices are for swimmers assigned to the Age Group practice sessions, but who cannot attend their morning practices during that week for any reason. Swimmers assigned to the Mini/Junior practice sessions cannot attend the evening practices. No swimmer is allowed to attend both a morning and evening practice on the same day.
Cottontail Swim and Racquet Club
Swim Team Registration and Communication:
All registrations for the Cottontail Cobias swim team will be done online for the 2017 season. Log in to your Cottontail member account and locate the event called “Bonded Member 2017 Swim Team Registration” or “Associate Member 2017 Swim Team Registration” under the Calendar section or the Socials/Private Events section of the website. Follow the instructions on each screen and fill out the online registration form completely.
Registration fees should be paid by check (made out to “Cottontail Swim Team”) in one of the following ways:
1. Pay in person at the Swim Team Orientation Meeting on May 3
2. Mail payment to: Attn: Swim Team Rep, 7000 Cottontail Ct, Springfield, VA 22153
3. Drop off payment at the front (guard) desk at Cottontail when the Club is open
Note: Payments may also be made in cash, but we cannot accept responsibility for lost/missing cash payments that are mailed or dropped at the front desk.
Due to changes in the Gmail service, we can no longer send ‘blind cc’ email blasts to a large group using that email provider. This season, our primary means of communicating with you will be using the email tied to your Club membership record (in your user profile, the email address that you enter into the field called “E-Mail”). If you have additional email addresses that you wish to use for swim team communications, these addresses must be entered into the online swim team registration form. We will create a Gmail list and send duplicates of team communications, but all addressees in this list will be visible to other list members.
PLEASE BE AWARE: If you ‘unsubscribe’ to ANY email blast from Cottontail Swim & Racquet Club, even those not generated by the swim team, you will be removed from the swim team email distribution list. DO NOT HIT UNSUBSCRIBE unless this is what you want.
Your swim team registration is not complete until we receive a volunteer check from your family. Turn in your volunteer check in the amount of $150.00 made out to "Cottontail Swim Team."
Families with ONLY Mini/Junior Cobia swimmers do not need to turn in a volunteer check.
Families for which one or more parent(s) have volunteered to be team Committee Chairs/Members (e.g. Concessions, Banquet, Socials) do not need to turn in a volunteer check. Families who are exempt from the volunteer fee for this reason will receive an email from the Team Rep stating this exemption. If you do not get this email, you must submit a volunteer fee check.
If you are unsure whether or not you need to turn in a volunteer check, please contact the Team Rep to find out.

General Swim Team Information and Practice Schedules:
Swim Team at Cottontail (The Cobias) -- The Cottontail swim team is open to the children (age 18 and younger as of June 1 of the current calendar year) of all member families at Cottontail Swim and Racquet Club. We have had children as young as 2 years old join the program. Our team is all about fun, enjoying the summer, and learning to love the sport of swimming!!
We compete in the Northern Virginia Swim League (Division 5 in 2017) and in the Springfield-Burke Developmental League. Our season begins on the first Wednesday after Memorial Day and ends on the last Saturday in July every year.
In addition to swim practices and meets, we sponsor/host many social activities for the kids during the year, both at Cottontail and at various recreational venues in northern Virginia. Activities scheduled for this year include: bagel and pancake breakfasts after practices, a mini-golf outing, team trip to Splashdown Waterpark, Cobia Pasta Kickoff Pot Luck, laser tag at Shadowland, the ever-popular Midnight Swim Team Party, pep rallies, July 4th parade, the annual Swim Team Banquet and Slideshow and more! While we are a competitive swim team and enjoy winning our meets whenever possible, it is our team social activities that are the highlight of the summer for most of our swimmers. Friendships formed at Cottontail stay with our swimmers through their high school years and beyond!
The swim team season begins as soon as the pool opens, with our annual new swimmer evaluation day on the Wednesday following Memorial Day. All swimmers who are new to the team and who can swim at least one length of the pool (25 m) are invited and encouraged to come to this evaluation. Our coaching staff will place swimmers into the appropriate practice group (see descriptions of the practice groups below) at this time. If a swimmer is not yet able to swim an entire length of the pool, then they should plan to practice with the Mini/Junior Cobia group and should attend the Mini/Junior evaluation day instead.
In order to join the swim team, you must first be a member of Cottontail Swim and Racquet Club, then simply fill out the online registration form and pay your swim team fees (either by mail, at the swim team orientation meeting, or at the front desk at Cottontail).
Bonded Members Fees:

Associate Members Fees:
